What is Strong Customer Authentication (SCA):

SCA is a European regulatory requirement that came into force on the 14 September 2019. Its purpose is to reduce fraud by increasing the security of online payments made in Europe.

Following its implementation, a person making a payment is now prompted to provide additional information at the point of purchase, authenticating his/her identity before the payment is allowed to complete.

Forms of authentication:

A customer may now be asked to:

  • Enter a pin number, password or answer a security question
  • Enter a verification code sent to his/her phone
  • Pass a face or voice recognition check

What this means for a TIMIFY user

Although TIMIFY doesn’t receive payments directly, we offer this service to our customers via the payment gateway service Stripe.

Stripe has been officially recognised as being SCA ready, meaning they have implemented the requisite 3D Secure 2 (3DS2) standard and users will now need to provide the additional authentication to complete a transaction.

In the case of one of your customers failing to pass the additional authentication requirements, the transaction will be declined. If you have made payment in advance mandatory for one of your services, this declined transaction will mean your customer is unable to complete the booking of your service.

We recommend informing your customers of the changes and to take into account the new SCA authentication requirements before they make their payment online.
